Chapter Meeting: Driving Business Success with Employee Engagement

Driving Business Success with Employee Engagement

Employee engagement is critical to an organization’s success, but do you know how to define it and measure it? If your organization isn’t measuring it, are you able to explain the business case to leaders? If you aren’t able to measure it with traditional methods, are you equipped to work with managers on informal or innovative ways to re-engage employees?

Through this presentation we will explain what employee engagement is, how it is different from satisfaction, and how it impacts organizational success. We will enable attendees to use a research-based definition of employee engagement as a basis for measurement, and to partner with leaders and managers with actionable ways to influence key drivers of engagement.

Speaker Bios:

Laura Hamill, Ph.D.

Laura Hamill has a Ph. D. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology and has over 15 years of experience architecting and implementing research and assessment strategies in organizations.

Laura owns Paris Phoenix Group, an organizational research and assessment consulting firm that she started in early 2006, and is Vice President of multirater.com, a partner company in business for 12 years and a Microsoft vendor since 2002. Before starting her own company, Laura worked for Microsoft for over 8 years, primarily as the Director of People Research, a team of organizational researchers. In this role, she developed Microsoft's first leadership competency model, developed multiple large-scale assessment techniques and processes, and conducted individual executive assessments for their senior-most leaders. Before Microsoft, Laura conducted employee research at Allstate Research and Planning Center and Bell Atlantic.

She earned her Ph.D. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from Old Dominion University and a B.S. in Psychology from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She is a Member of the Society for Industrial/Organizational Psychology (SIOP), and has presented at several national SIOP conferences, and the Pacific Northwest HR Strategic Forum.

Lindsay Bousman, Ph. D.

Lindsay Bousman has extensive experience with employee research and focus groups, competency development, validation, and talent management, most recently for Starbucks Coffee Company, and prior to that for Microsoft Corporation. She has consulted on career model and competency development and validation, conducted global all-employee surveys for both Starbucks and Microsoft, culture surveys and assessments, exit survey programs and analyses, developed training evaluation materials and provided custom research services internally for local corporations. She has also taught Survey Research in the graduate program at Seattle Pacific University. Prior to her Northwest professional career, she worked in the Midwest as an independent consultant providing project support and statistical analyses, developing selection tests and assessments, and worked as a compensation analyst in HR for Central States Health and Life Company of Omaha.

She earned her Ph.D. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from the University of Nebraska, an M.A. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and a B.A. in Psychology at William Woods University. She is a Member of the Society for Industrial/Organizational Psychology (SIOP), and National and Seattle SHRM. She has presented at several national SIOP conferences and the Seattle Volunteer Administrator’s Network annual conference.

Learning Outcomes:

• Explain what employee engagement is, how it is different from satisfaction, and how it impacts organizational success.
• Use a research-based definition of employee engagement as a basis for measurement.
• Partner with leaders and managers to influence key drivers of engagement.

WHEN: Thursday, May 17th, 2012 - 7:30AM to 9:00AM

HR Career Management is a forum for HR professionals to learn and discuss navigating their profession—from certification to networking in HR to finding new opportunities or exploring different career trajectories. The SIG leverages HR career experts in our community as experts-in-residence at the monthly meeting to host a discussion and provide counsel. Whether you are years into an HR career, considering HR as a new direction, or are actively seeking a new position, this SIG is an opportunity to better understand the current environment, network, and receive support for your professional direction. This group is co-chaired by Jen Boyd and Laura Doehle.
